President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan issued a message on the 72nd Anniversary of the Establishment of the United Nations:
I hope that the 72nd anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations, of which our country is a founding member, will lead to favourable developments both for our nation, our region and all mankind.
Turkey has been one of the staunchest advocates of the UN and the values represented by the UN which is the sole universal platform through which states can make their voices heard and bring forward their problems and solution suggestions for the maintenance of global peace and security.
Turkey has made great contributions to the work carried out under the umbrella of the United Nations, especially the Alliance of Civilizations and the prevention and resolution of conflicts, mediation, anti-terrorism, peacekeeping activities, development and humanitarian aid.
Constantly increasing its contributions to the UN budget over the recent years, Turkey has also been taking steps to turn Istanbul, which is an important business, financial and cultural centre in its region, into a UN centre.
In addition, as a sign of its ancient history, principles and understanding of civilization, Turkey has opened its doors to 3.5 million refugees who escaped from conflicts in Syria and Iraq and has not remained unresponsive to the rising cries of the oppressed and victims, from Rakhine to Somalia. Today, Turkey is the most generous country in the world in proportion to national income.
Today, what threatens the UN mission and global peace is the terrorist organizations. Violent organizations such as DAESH, Al-Qaeda, YPG, PKK, DHKP-C and FETO pose a great risk not only for the security of Turkey but also for the security and stability of the region and the whole world. No excuse and no consideration can justify providing weapons to terrorist organizations and legitimising terror. It is essential to increase solidarity and cooperation against terrorism especially within the UN framework.
During the current period of time which brings radical changes in terms of threats, trials and needs, it is unthinkable that the UN which has undertaken a wide range of responsibilities would remain the same. At the moment, the UN reform is an irrecusable, indispensable, unignorable need.
Unless the current injustice in the Security Council, symbolized by the slogan "World is bigger than 5" is resolved, neither global peace nor the UN reform will be achieved fully.
Within this framework, Turkey shall maintain its support for the UN reform which will make the UN Security Council more equitable, more democratic, transparent, efficient and accountable.
I hope that works of the UN help bring peace and prosperity to our world, and congratulate the UN Day with my most sincere feelings.
