President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a speech at the Urbanization Forum, which was held with the theme of ‘New Vision in Urbanization’ by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization.
Commencing his speech by marking the Nov. 8th World Urbanism Day, President Erdoğan thanked those who contributed to the forum and stressed that the decisions to be taken during the forum, and its final declaration, would serve as a reference for organizations and institutions which operate in the field of city planning.
CITIES TODAY DON’T BRING PEACE, CALM AND WELFARE TO MANKIND
Pointing to urbanization as the field in which the negative implications of the contemporary individual’s mental degradation become most visible, President Erdoğan underlined: “Mankind manifests himself, too, in the cities he builds. In this regard, cities also mirror their builders as well as their current and former residents.”
President Erdoğan continued: “Today, our cities are unfortunately being built with an approach that is centered on ‘personal ambitions’ not on ‘mankind’s nature.’ Any site that is not in harmony with mankind’s nature turns over time into mankind’s dungeon. That is why cities today don’t bring peace, calm and welfare to mankind.”
STEPS OF HISTORIC IMPORTANCE TAKEN OVER THE PAST 15 YEARS
Drawing attention to the ongoing efforts across Turkey in the field of urbanization, President Erdoğan said: “We have taken steps of historic importance particularly over the past 15 years towards resolving the accumulated problems of our 81 provinces. Together with all our institutions, we carry on our efforts to put an end to the centuries-long negligence and to resolve the issues that have become chronic.”
NEW POLICIES NEEDED IN URBANIZATION
New policies and approaches are needed in urbanization, President Erdoğan underlined, and added: “We cannot reach the level we desire in urbanization without putting mankind in the center. We, as well, shall work to synthesize modern architecture’s resources and what is ancient and long-lasting.”
President Erdoğan expressed his wish for the Urbanization Forum, which was the fruit of a devoted endeavor, to serve as a milestone in the planning and implementation of the cities of future and congratulated its organizers at the end of his speech.
